But anyway, I was panicking thinking the rabbit pellets had caused a bowel impaction in our Bearded Dragon.  Well, after doing some research, and using some common sense, we were able to figure out what had happened.

Her heat bulb had burned out, and it caused the temperature to drop to around 80 degrees.  I didn't think anything of it, since we had been having over 100 degree days and our house was really warm.  Well, apparently, Beardie wasn't able to maintain her body temperature, and so she wasn't able to digest the food properly.  So this is what we did and it saved the day!

I made a nice warm bath for her in the bathtub.  You don't want to make it hot, because it can burn the sensitive skin on her belly.  And we let her stay in there about 15 minutes until she felt warm.  Then we installed the heat lamp and put her back in her cage.  And wow! Did she perk up!

She ate lettuce that night, and the next day, there was not regurgitated food, and she acted and ate normally the two days!

For your own reptile or lizard care, make sure the heat lamps are always on and you are maintaining a good temperature.  You want the lamp on one end of the aquarium so they can get in and out of the heat so they regulate their body temperature.

Reptiles are so interesting and unusal looking, and having a pet reptile is fascinating too.  You may have seen many of them at your local zoo, pet store, or museum.

But if you have never raised a pet reptile before, and you are thinking about getting one for yourself, then keep reading.  Leopard Geckos are one of the easiest pet lizards. Two great things about Leopard Geckos is that they don't get very big, and they live for about 15 years.

They have been kept and bred in captivity since the 1920's and are one of the healthiest and easiest lizards to keep.

A baby gecko is quite active, but as they grow older they will get quieter and more tame especially if you have raised from a juvenile.  A full grown gecko doesn't get bigger than about 10 inches and they can be handled by older children.

The only caution is not hold them or catch them by the tail.  This is where the Gecko stores its fat, and they will break off.  It will grow back, but it won't look the same.

The proper house for a Leopard Gecko would be a glass or plastic aquarium.  However, you will need a source of heat, so glass would be preferred. You will want an under tank heater, as well as a overhead ceramic heater.  The Geckos need to have a constant temperature for proper nutritional absorption.

DO NOT USE HOT ROCKS!  Hot rocks are not advisable for lizards.  It can cook them.

There is some controversy about whether or not Leopard Geckos need UVB rays that are similar to daylight.  Because they are nocturnal they hide.  But we had one get really skinny and sick, and I believe it would have been alot healthier had we used a UVB bulb to allow it to absorb the calicum it needed.

We thank Leppy for his guidance and teaching.  So that's what we use now and everyone seems very happy and healthy.

Crickets and mealworms are the main food source.  You can offer romaine lettuce cut up very fine.

Raising reptiles can be a lot of fun and rewarding.  And they will get into your routine very quickly.

Have you always been fascinated by reptiles, and now you are considering getting your first pet reptile?

First consider all the special equipment you will need to buy in order to keep your pet reptile healthy.  This pet reptile could either be a Leopard Gecko or Bearded Dragon, or a Red Ear Slider Turtle, or even a Boa Constrictor.  Whatever pet you decide to buy, you need to understand that not all pet stores sell quality reptiles.

The first thing you will want to see is if the conditions the store or breeder are keeping their reptiles in are clean and well lit with quality lighting and temperature control.

The second thing to look at is whether or not the reptiles have the following qualities:

1.  Clear Eyes - the eyes of the reptile, either a lizard, turtle or snake, must have clear eyes.  Don't buy a pet reptile that has cloudy eyes.

2. Clear Nose - Check the nose and see if it is clear.  If you see any type of discharge or bubbling, that is a clear indication the lizard, snake, or turtle has a sinus infection.  In that case, it would be best to say "thank you" and leave.  Something like that is very contagious, and you won't want to take a chance on buying a pet reptile with any type of illness.

3. Clear Vent - This is where the reptile discharges their fecal matter.  Reptiles are similar to birds in that they don't have a seperate feces and urine process, it is all combined with dark and white colored feces. The vent must be clear, but by the same token, you want to have an indication that the pet reptile is elminating properly without any type of blockage.

4. Alert and Active - Make sure the pet reptile is alert and active.  If they appear to be sluggish or listless, then pass on it as a pet.  The last thing you will want is expensive vet bills and possibly losing the pet reptile.

5. Aquatic Turtles - Make sure their shell is hard and that there aren't any white spots, or soft spots on the shell.  Make sure there aren't any signs of fungus around the neck or feet, or legs.

Consider the reputation of the seller and breeder before buying your pet reptile.  If they are someone selling at a flea market or on the corner, you won't be able to contact them for questions.

Make sure you have someone knowledgable to help you in purchasing your new pet reptile.  They will bring you years of enjoyment.

The day has come, and you are ready to get your pet turtle and bring it home.  But you want to make sure you have everything you need to care for it properly.  Since there are so many turtles to choose, and each one has it's own special needs, I have given you five tips that will help with any type of turtle you decide to bring home. 

Tip One - Pet Turtle Habitat

Giving your pet turtle the right kind of environment is really important.  If your turtle is aquatic, then you will need a turtle aquarium and the right supplies for an aquatic turtle.  If it's a land turtle or box turtle, then you need to make sure you have the right kind of lighting and soil.

It is important to regulate the temperature which can be easily done through using the right kind of incandesent bulbs.  Give your aquatic turtles an island to rest and bask.

Tip Two - Pet Turtle Proper Diet
Make sure you get the right kind of food for your type of turtle.  Many turtles will eat fresh vegetables such as lettuce and it will keep them healthy.  Only shop at a reputable pet shop that has experienced reptile keepers.

Tip Three - Pet Turtles Social or Not Social  

Depending on the type of pet turtle you have, some like living in groups and others like to be solitary. For the kind that like to live in groups, be careful to keep them the same size and similar porportion.  That way there won't be any bullying or injuries.


Tip Four - Pet Turtle Care

Pet Turtles need to be taken care of daily.  Make yourself aware of your turtles habits, when they eat, when they sleep, and what their normal patterns of behavior are.  That way if anything doesn't look right, you will know right away.

Having a book that gives you guidelines on what is normal and what isn't  for the care and keeping of your pet turtle is very important.

No matter what kind of pet turtle you are looking for, since there are many to choose from, you will need to give them the kind of environment they are used to.  Learning how to care for them and know what is involved in keeping them is very important for their long term health.

First thing to consider when you are trying to decide what type of turtle you want to keep, either an aquatic, semi-aquatic or land turtle, is how much time and space you have to care for one.  A box turtle needs moist soil and a place to burrow.  Whereas a water turtle needs an aquarium with a heater and a filter and the proper lighting.

It is always recommended that you limit the handling of turtles when it comes to small children.  Always make sure children wash their hands after handling any kind of reptile since they can carry salmonella.

The fun about aquatic turtles is they like to swim, and children can watch them go through their antics while swimming.  They have softer shells and are lighter in color than the land turtles.  The softer shell makes it easier for the aquatic turtle to float and they are more agile than the land turtles.

Semi-aquatic turtles can make great pets.  Again, you want to make the perfect home for them.  There is nothing worse, than realizing too late that a filter or a light could have made a huge difference in your turtle keeping.  The temperature should be monitored with a thermometer with it being a little warmer during the day, and cooler at night.

Having your turtle in your family room will help you keep track of how the shell looks, that their eyes are clear, and they are eating well.

A terrarium for your pet lizard or turtle is usually an aquarium that is not set up with water, but has sand, rock and plants like a desert or rain forest.  Many times the top is screened to allow air to flow and to allow the heat and light to come in.

Since reptiles can't reguluate their own body temperatures, it is important that you have the proper heating and lighting for your pet lizard.  When they get too cold, or don't have the right kind of light, they can get sick.  When their body temperatures drop because there isn't enough heat, they slow down, and don't eat very much.

The light is critical because they need the ultraviolet rays to keep them healthy.

What is required for keeping pet lizards and reptiles?

1. A flourescent light bulb that has Ultraviolet rays
2. A basking light or ceramic heat radiator
3. A thermometer to monitor the correct temperature

So a proper terrarium is set up with the perfect heat source and lighting.

After the initial investment of buying these supplies, the difference we saw in "Beardie" was huge.  She became very active, and developed a big appetite.  So even though it might seem complicated or costly in the beginning, it makes a big difference in the long run.

Many people are not aware that a turtle or a terrapin are completely different from each other.  During my research, I saw the two terms used together, so I automatically assumed they were the same thing.  There are many different types of turtles.  Box turtles live on land, tortoises live in the desert climates, sea turtles live in the ocean, fresh water turtles and brackish water turtles live in streams and rivers.

You must know the difference between a male and a female turtle because they require different types of care.

Make sure you have someone to take care of your turtle while you are gone on vacation.  They must not be left for many days alone.

When lizards are enjoying their basking time in the sun, and not being chased by predators, they will do some pretty interesting things with their tongues.  All reptiles have different shapes, sizes and colors of tongues, and sometimes they are used for different things.Gecko lizards don't have eyelids, so they use their long tongue to lick their eyes to keep them moist and keep them clean.

The tongues of lizards are usually long and narrow with a forked tip, or they can be wide and short.  But in all cases the tongues are used to collect molecules from the air and so they can be used by an organ in their mouth.

The use of the lizards tongue for this purpose is different than just smell or taste, but is similar.

There is a Great Plains lizard that licks her eggs while she is waiting for them to hatch.

In Austrailia, the skink has a bright blue tongue that it uses to scare off predators.  And it will let it stay hanging out of its mouth.  Reptile enthusiasts are not sure why it does this though.

And finally, Chameleons use their long and sticky tongue to catch unsuspecting insects at night.

So the next time you are holding your pet lizard and they stick their tongue out to touch your hand or finger, you will know that he is using it to gather molecules or smells, and not trying to be rude.

For starters it would be a great idea to invest in reptile supplies like furnishings that your pet lizard would naturally find in his environment.  This would include a climbing branch, since many different lizards like to climb, perch and bask on different size branches.

Smoothed grapevines work really well and are easy for them to climb.  For hatchlings and juveniles, they like to climb and sleep on these branches.  My bearded lizard goes to sleep every night on her branch right under the ceramic basking heater.

A larger branch would be recommended when your pet lizard gets bigger.  They need a branch that is wide enough to support their large bellies when they are older.

These branches when added to your terrarium, will give your terrarium a natural look while giving your pet lizard a natural perch.

Large rocks are also an option.  Your Pet Lizard will enjoy a rock just as much as a grapevine branch.  Sandstones are great for being smooth enough, as well as having the ability to hold in the heat.  You want to make the stones or rocks that you use are not to heavy for your glass aquarium.

There are plastic versions of rock and hides that your pet lizard will enjoy just as much.  By getting one of these manufactured rocks, you will be able to clean it easily, it won't be too heavy for the tank, and it's easy to clean.  Cleanliness is very important for your lizard or reptile tank since it is a closed environment, it makes it very easy for germs to breed.
