garter snakes are not good pets.
i recommend a corn snake or ball python.
    you need for any snake:
half the tank to be heated to 80-85 degrees and half to be in the low 70′s.
    water bowl
2 places for it 2 hide (one on the warm side, and one on the cool side
    aspen or newspaper for substrate
1 branch to climb on (baked for 30 mins on 400)
    1 fake plant
    tank clip top
    food

garter snakes are wild and should NOT be kept by humans, get a corn snake or ball python please if you want to be happy and if you want to handle it

    lengths:
    garter: about 5-6 feet
    corn snake: 4-6 feet
    ball python: 6-8 feet

Garter snakes are great pets!! I have had a garter snake for 4 years now, and it had been a great companion. You have everything you need except for a water bowl. Garter snakes are semi-aquatic and will need a fairly large water bowl. As for where you can get this stuff, you can visit you local PetCo to get the supplies. I have no idea where you could get a garter snake. I caught mine in my backyard, but I would check Reptilecity.com.

Garter snakes really aren’t that great, actually.
They are nervous without handling. And mildly venomous. Just keep this in mind.

What about 2 thermometers? Those are essential. A water dish, of course! And most definatley get another hide. Other than that you should be set!
