Yeah, you can use play sand. It’s mentioned on quite a few websites. That calci-sand is crazy expensive.
Yup you just have to change it more often
I use play sand in my 100 gallon along with coconut fibre.
the problem with play sand is it often has a lot of nasty stuff in it. some even have traces of asbestos which is not something you want the hermit crabs breathing or even you for that matter.
make sure it is a high quality sand. cook it at 450f for 15-20 minutes to kill any bugs. sift it and then put it in the tank.
some fish stores sell crushed coral in bulk. It may be something to look into.
Calci-sand is a pain in the butt any way.
