she could be attracted to the male or just wanting to breed including him so shes appearance out to do her mating rituals, if you will, so dont worry about it just desire for the most brilliant.
She could possibly be looking for a place to have her young. I have had a Garter meander who like to get on to below a heap of grass/straw which was damp to have her young.
snakes now and again go below the sand to cool down or just because that is untreated for them.
