she could be attracted to the male or just wanting to breed with him so shes coming out to do her mating rituals, if you will, so dont worry about it just hope for the best.

She could possibly be looking for a place to have her young. I have had a Garter snake who like to get under a pile of grass/straw which was damp to have her young.

snakes sometimes go under the sand to cool down or just because that is natural for them.

they say its hard to breed snakes however my father bought me a snake for my 16th birthday a corn snake and though the snake was supposed to be male it never ate for about a month and we tried everything!! then she layed eggs over her log! 2 fell into her water bowl but the other 24 were fine, i called a reptile shop who told me that they would die and i had no idea what i was doing however i read a book on how to care for them and 22 of the 24 hatched. i would encourage you just to read up on the hatching process just incase this happens but i would say the main signs are loss of appitite and when they shed it is not a full shed it comes off in bits
